How we can help

Our team of trained, experienced Sessional Staff specialises in learning disabilities, and can support you with personal assistance, advice on use of public transport, enjoying meaningful activities, and being part of your community.

Our aim is to encourage greater independence, support improvements in physical ability, and assist in developing confidence and social skills that can help to build friendships and relationships.

By spending time with you to assess your needs and understand you as individual, our staff can help you improve your day to day life and take advantage of the opportunities available in their community, together with your Greenwich Mencap assistant.

The information below will help you understand more about this service, how to pay for it and how to apply.

How it works

Once you have been assessed for support, and referred to our service we will meet with you to agree your care and support plan. We aim to provide a support package designed to meet your individual needs.

Available from Monday to Saturday, our Independent Living Assistants can provide support in your own home or support you to participate in an activity of your own choice. You can suggest new activities you want to try or you can attend an activity organised by Greenwich Mencap.

Who can use this service?

Greenwich Mencap's Independent Living Service is available to people who meet all of the following criteria:

  • Adults aged 18 years or over
  • Living with a learning disability, learning difficulty or autism
  • Resident in the Borough of Greenwich (which Borough do I live in?)
  • Referred by a carer, representative or agency, or self-referred using our Referral Form

Paying for this service

Once you have discussed your needs with our Independent Living Service Manager, we will be able to give you an indication of the cost of a package that's ideal for you.

If you have a Personal Budget, you can choose to use the service yourself. Otherwise, your care broker can provide information on the range of different providers available. Please note that staff travel expenses and the cost of any activities undertaken need to be paid for by the person being supported.
