Yoga for the Special Child is a step-by-step integrated system of Yoga poses designed to encourage the natural development of children with specific requirements, designed by Sonia Sumar.
Sonia's belief and the essence behind this work is that ‘every child is special, and no label can define or limit their potential for positive change’. In this work we use hatha yoga and divide the practice into 5 sections: asanas or body postures, pranayama or breathing exercises, cleansing practices, music and sound therapy, and deep relaxation.
Each child is assessed individually and a programme is created for them that we develop as they develop. This may be working 1:1 with a yoga practioner or in a group class.
Some of the benefits of yoga therapy are:
-increased attention and concentration
-develops flexibility and corrects postural alignment
-relieves respiratory ailments
-improves breathing and sleep patterns
-increases emotional stability and self esteem
-promotes an overall sense of well being, peace and calm
