Our Projects
Friendship Support Services
This project recruits and supports volunteers to befriend adults with
a learning disability. It also provides a Friendship bank, Ethnic minority
specific services, and a meet up club.
The Riverwood Project
This project collects driftwood from the River Thames and adults with
learning disabilities make items such as candleholders, benches and
other furniture to sell.
The Flexible Respite Scheme
Aimed at people aged 18 plus, this scheme uses sessional workers to
go into the home and provide a few hours respite for the carer. We also
try to use the time constructively to enable the service user to access
a leisure interest.
The Family Advisor Service
We have four workers in this scheme, two for children and two for adults.
The aim is to provide support, advice and advocacy for people with a
learning disability and their families on a wide range of issues, including
benefits, housing, education and accessing services.
The Greenlights Project
This project provides specialist support for families who have a child
with a learning disability and behavioural problems. The project worker
works alongside parents to give them practical support and guidance
on how to deal with challenging behaviour.

About Us
Greenwich
Mencap was established in 1951 by parents who were concerned about the
level of services their children with a learning disability were receiving.
The organisation was run, for many years, by parents and volunteers but
now employs 7 full time staff as well as sessional workers and volunteers.
Our
main aim is to
"work with and for people with a learning disability and their
families who live in or are the responsibility of, the London Brough of
Greenwich."
We pride ourselves on providing good effective services
that make a difference to people with learning disabilities and their
families. We are also involved in campaigning for rights and services
as well as ensuring that the people who use our services have their voice
heard in a variety of forums.
We receive funding from a variety of sources including
London Borough of Greenwich, Department of Health, Children In Need and
other external funders. We also receive an annual donation from the Greenwich
Mencap Shop as well as many of our members who also give regular donations
and/or leave legacies.
You do not have to be a member to receive a service however we like to
encourage people to join.
The cost of individual membership at present is £5 a year (other details on membership form). For this you
receive a monthly newsletter detailing issues and events in the borough,
invites to all social events and a chance to have your voice heard in
the design and implementation of services in Greenwich. |
